Text message scams: how to spot a fake message

Safety · 3 min read

A parcel is stuck, a refund is waiting. How to spot fake messages.

Your phone beeps. Your parcel is stuck, or a refund is waiting for you. All you have to do is tap a link. That is exactly how scammers work.

How to spot a fake text message

  • You are told to act fast or something bad will happen.
  • The message contains a link you are meant to tap.
  • You are asked to enter bank details, a password or a code.
  • The address looks odd or does not match the company.

Guichet.lu itself warns about such messages. The official addresses are guichet.public.lu and services-publics.lu. Guichet and MyGuichet do not send you text messages, unless you have switched on the eTracking function.

What to do

  1. Do not tap the link.
  2. Do not reply.
  3. Delete the message.
  4. Not sure? Call the company or your bank on a number you already know.

Have you already tapped or entered something?

Stay calm, but act straight away. Call your bank and ask them to check your account or card. If you entered LuxTrust login details, contact LuxTrust as well. The free BEE SECURE helpline is on 8002 1234: Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 12 noon, Thursday from 3 pm to 6 pm.
