A call from the "bank": what to do

Safety · 3 min read

Someone calls and says your money is in danger. How to react.

The phone rings. Someone says they are from your bank or from the police. Your money is in danger and you must act now. It sounds frighteningly real. The police in Luxembourg explicitly warn about these calls.

What a real bank does not do

  • It does not ask for your login details or codes on the phone.
  • It does not ask you to hand your card or login details to strangers.
  • It does not put you under pressure.

How to react

  1. Hang up. That is not rude.
  2. Do not pass on any codes or details.
  3. Call your bank yourself. Take the number from your card or bank statement.
  4. If you have doubts about a so-called police officer, call 113.

How to recognise the real police

The police say so themselves: all police officers in Luxembourg speak fluent Luxembourgish and can show an official ID card.

Tell others

The police ask people to warn others, especially older neighbours. So feel free to talk about it in the family and at your club. Nobody needs to feel embarrassed. Scammers are well trained.

RememberYou may always hang up. You can call the bank back yourself.
