Fake technician on the phone or on your screen

Safety · 3 min read

A red warning fills the screen and tells you to call a number. Do not do it.

Suddenly the whole screen is filled with a warning, and it may even beep. You are told to call a number at once. Or someone calls you and says they are from computer support. In both cases it is usually scammers.

How the trick works

The fake technician says your computer has a virus. Then you are told to install a program so that he can look at your computer. That gives him access to your data, or you are asked to pay for a supposed repair.

How to react

  1. Do not call any number shown on the screen.
  2. Do not install anything just because a stranger tells you to.
  3. Hang up if someone calls you.
  4. Close the window in your internet program. If that does not work, switch the computer off and on again.

Has someone already been on your computer?

Disconnect the computer from the internet and call your bank if you entered bank details or paid anything. Then have the computer checked. You can also get free advice from the BEE SECURE helpline on 8002 1234.
